Voice Change - Class 10 SEBA HSLC Exam



Type of Voice: Two types of voice.

  • Active Voice

In the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action expressed by the verb. This form is direct, making it clear who is doing what.

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object

Examples:

Hima (subject) writes (verb) a letter. (object).


The teacher (subject) explained (verb) the lesson (object).


  • Passive voice

In the passive voice, the object of an action becomes the subject of the sentence. The focus is on the action or the recipient of the action rather than on who or what is acting.

Structure: Subject (recipient) + form of "to be" + past participle (of the main verb) + (by the agent)

Examples:

A baby (subject) is bitten (verb) by this dog (agent).


Tigers (subject) are troubled (verb) by flies (agent).

a) They asked the boy many questions.


Answer: The boy was asked many questions (by them).



b) The policeman will catch the thief.


Answer: The thief will be caught by the policeman.



HSLC-1997



a) I know your father very well.


Answer: Your father is known to me very well.



b) The poem was written by my sister.


Answer: My sister wrote the poem.



HSLC-1998



a) We have completed the arrangements for the fair.


Answer: The arrangements for the fair have been completed (by us).



b) The patient is being examined by a doctor.


Answer: A doctor is examining the patient.



HSLC-1999



a) This dog bites strangers.


Answer: Strangers are bitten by this dog.



b) He was taken to hospital.


Answer: Someone took him to the hospital.



HSLC-2000



a) You should not raise this question now.


Answer: This question should not be raised now (by you).



b) The bridge was completed in record time.


Answer: They completed the bridge in record time.

a) They say that he is a saint.


Answer: It is said that he is a saint.



b) Was a tiger killed by the hunter?


Answer: Did the hunter kill a tiger?

a) People speak English all over the world.

a) A doctor is examining the patients.


Answer: The patients are being examined by a doctor.

Answer: The window panes were broken by some boys.

Answer: The work has been completed (by them).

a) I have posted the letters.


Answer: The letters have been posted by me.



b) The lady helps the poor.


Answer: The poor are helped by the lady.

a) He is writing a letter.


Answer: A letter is being written by him.



b) The hunter killed the tiger.
